in isolation you can, but not when you realise how little money he had to work with.

re lanzini, he was missing for lots of last season and we still did okay without him. the medical team would have plenty of time to asses him. he would know 100% about the state of his knee and his performance.

and anyway, Fornals & Lanzini have always been on the pitch together so that completely dispels the idea of one replacing the other.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
We do need another mobile, pacy, strong defensive minded midfielder in the squad and one that works relentlessly closing down but its also a coaching issue for me. The modern midfield all have to work off the ball and as a team you defend as a collective unit. Even though we lack pace and physicality I still see the opposition attackers and overlapping full backs running through unchallenged and not being tracked. We cannot carry 3 or 4 midfield players who are only "in play" when we have the ball. Wilshire, Lanzini, Fornals, Yarmalenko and Anderson... none of these players put in a shift and help press. Guardiola has De Bryune, Silva, Aguero and the rest of his supposed "gifted" players working hard when they are not in possession following the "gegenpress" model made famous at Barca. Pellegrini does not seem to demand it?

We could do with someone like Ndidi or of course the likes of Kante.

The only midfield players who seems to see defending as part of their responsibility are Noble and Snoddy and on occasions Anderson. Not enough. Noble and Snoddy really lack pace but we will have to play one of them alongside Rice in a lot of games it would seem.

Squad has some gaping holes which look like they will impede any sort of progress and a manager that so far seems unwilling to change tactics, system or formations to compensate?

just think he saw an opportunity to get a young player he rates highly in Fornals for a relatively cheap price which is why he went for him

can understand why if that’s the case

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Lanzini was out for most of the last season and in those few games he had he looked average. Also, it was unclear whether he will sign new contract or not. Therefore, we needed someone like fornals as there was no player in our squad that could replace lanzini. Signing fornals also meant that diangana could leave on loan so he could develop..

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
but he didnt need Fornals this summer, and everyone can see that.
he doesnt have the luxury of time or tonnes of cash so £24m has to make an immediate impact.

the left back situation i can kind of understand, but i dont believe we couldnt have sold one of them and reinvested.

the DM thing was obvious to everybody, i dont know one west ham fan who didnt pinpoint that position as a 'must improve' this summer.
we cant all be idiots.

we needed a forward, dm, lb, and if Lanzini turned down a new deal probably a new attacking mid as well. We weren’t getting all them on the summer budget

Haller was a priority, Fornals is obviously rated and was available at a relative cheap price. Wait another year and Villarreal might have been asking double what we paid, who knows

whatever Pellegrini went for this summer he was going to leave a couple of areas short with the budget he had

maybe Roberto can play left back? is he left footed?

goose 12:07 Tue Aug 20
Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
so the positions which were the obvious problem you would wait a year so you can sign (another) attacking midfielder?
madness.
why would you be stupid enough to put it off when you are judged on the here and now? makes no sense.

chances are he wont be here next season.

"Could Masuaku play in the middle along side Rice?"

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Exactly my thoughts paulon. I expect us to sign a quality dm and fullbacks next summer. Zabaleta, sanchez and chicha are out of contract so that will free us 280k per week, while we might shift ogbonna, cresswell, wilshere? and snodgrass.

Could Masuaku play in the middle along side Rice? Play Johnson at left back instead?

He's good on the ball and has energy. I just dont think he can be the last man defensively.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
We didn't need anymore attacking midfielders when it's staring us in the face that we get overun in midfield.
Never thought I'd have to say that we're missing Noble not only for his workrate but his captaincy because at the moment there's nobody steering the ship.

paulon 11:13 Tue Aug 20
Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
can see why they went in for Fornals with the possibility of Lanzini not signing a new deal and the risks of him coming back from so long out

reality is Pellegrini can manage maybe 2 big signings per summer with the budget which is why it may take until next season for us to get a top class DM and defender in

would prefer that approach than 6/7 bang average signings every year

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
I think Fornals might turn out to be a good buy but not what we needed at this moment in time

We have a lot of ball players but no balls in midfield
Any side that works hard will bully our midfield with ease as was shown against Brighton

We were well outnumbered in the penalty areas both in attack & defence, which was entirely down to the midfielders not making up the ground, getting forward or covering back

Last seasons problems of lacking a strong cdm & LB are still plain to see

We still haven't replaced Kouyate & Obiang is gone

I thought Masuaka wasn't too bad against Brighton but he isn't the answer to our LB weakness. As for Cresswell, the less said, the better. Should have flogged him to Everton when we had the chance

Personally, I think we have a weaker squad this season than last, with only Haller proving to be a worthwhile signing so far

The one saving grace is that several of last seasons injury absentees are now coming back (Just like new signings!)

Time will tell as we're only 2 games in, but this is now Pellegrinis squad & it looks seriously out of balance

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
It's easy to say after his slow start why did we buy Fornals, was a strange one though as at the time the school of thought seemed to be that Lanzini must be leaving, we certainly are overloaded in that dept though and bringing in Fornals also moved Holland and Diangana further down the pecking order.

Time to draw a line under Saturday's poor showing now and see what happens at Elton John's Watford.

Whilst I agree with your point, I think getting Fornals in for £24m may well prove to be money well spent

Rossal.. Obviously the plan was to play it out, but we kept getting bullied off it.

Then less and less players were showing for it resulting in punts up the pitch.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
Watched MOTD last night and Masuaku for their goal was a joke. Basically walking to get back watching the bloke to see if he gets a shot off. If he ran back to get in position and potentially cut off the pass to the forward who was in the left back position then Ogbonna could of pressed the ball more and maybe he wouldnt of got his shot off and scored.

I mean thats not anything difficult or Innovative. Thats just pure basics, and I think watching our side on sat theres not enough of our players doing the pure basics of football matches and after a year and a bit under MP thats very worrying.

Another worrying trait is how unintelligent most of our play is. We get the ball and lump it to a small striker against 3 huge CB's time and time again. Its brainless.

MP definitely needs to improve. On paper he should be extracting far more from this squad then what we're getting.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-1
He spent 24m on a player we didn't need and ignored our obvious defensive frailty.
Regardless if how much money he was given, that is plain foolish!
